Over the years, different video and audio formats emerged which can be confusing to people who do not spend much time downloading, converting, or “ripping” files. Understanding these differences can be challenging, but most of the time, your audio and video files can usually be “ripped” or converted to one of the following formats with the help of DVD ripper. Below, we’ve listed the most common types of video and audio formats and their respective quality to give you a better idea of what you’re likely to be dealing with.
In the past, video was consumed in two ways: cinema or television. With the boom of streaming platforms and devices, they cater to different video formats. So, it’s important to understand the types of video formats and which device they are most compatible with. This is helpful for creators looking to put their best foot forward in their projects. The video formats listed below are compatible with Windows and Mac.
AVI (Audio Video Interleave) was introduced by Microsoft in 1992. It’s compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux. For Mac users, however, the free version of QuickTime is not compatible with all types of AVI files. Continue reading to find the best Windows DVD ripper.
AVI is known for its high quality and closely associated with the DivX Codec, notable for compressing videos but maintaining its high quality. However, this comes at a cost. It ends up being a large file and takes up more space on computers. It’s also not commonly used format for streaming sites.
MP4 is the most widely used format today. It’s also an abbreviation of MPEG-4, a compressed file that can contain video, audio, and subtitles. As it can support high resolution videos and relatively small in size, it’s known as the standard format in media software. MP4 files can be uploaded to various Apple products (iPhone, iPod, etc.), streamed in iTunes, and playable on Windows Media Player.
Also known as Windows Media Player, it is developed by Microsoft and is most compatible with Windows. However, WMV is also playable on Mac. But Mac users need to download a WMV player and plug in like Flip4Mac when playing WMV files. It was originally designed for streaming videos. Similar to AVI, WMV offers improved video quality and has a good compression rate but takes up more space.
MOV is like WMV to Windows. Developed by Apple, it’s designed for QuickTime player and works best for Mac but also compatible for Windows. Compared to AVI, it’s smaller in size and often uses MPEG-4 as a codec. However, MOV has been criticized for lousy compression of audio.
FLV is designed for the Adobe Flash Player, and it’s most common on websites. However, it’s not common as a distribution format like WMV or QuickTime. So, it’s likely you will have to convert files to FLV or vice versa. A pitfall of FLV is that any extra conversions will likely reduce file quality.
Like video files, audio files come in all types and sizes. However, there are three major categories of audio file formats: uncompressed audio formats, formats with lossless compression, and formats with lossy compression.
Uncompressed audio formats are most commonly accepted by low level audio. Lossless compressed audio formats store data using less space without losing any information. Lastly, lossy compressed audio format has greater file size reduction compared to uncompressed audio formats. It simplifies the data and removes some of the audio information. With that being said, what are some of the most common audio file formats that wasn’t mentioned above?
Even if you aren’t an audio expert, you should know of MP3 being one of the most common digital audio formats. A high audio quality with also high compression. However, MP3 VBR (Variable Bit Rates) is known to take up less space and better quality.
Similar to MP3, it takes up less space while maintaining high audio quality. Yet, some say AAC achieves better sound quality than MP3 at the same bit rate. It’s also designed for lossy digital audio compression.
WAV audio format was developed by Microsoft and IBM. It’s meant to provide the same sound quality as your original DVDs.
The M4A file format is encoded with AAC and is meant to be a successor to MP3.
Now, there are increasing demands from users, like how to rip and convert DVD to MKV.
Depending on your device, you should convert to the format most suitable for playback.
As Windows is owned by Microsoft, the company presents a list of file types supported by Windows Media Player 12 on their support website, most of which DVDFab DVD Ripper is capable of. The most popular formats such as WMV, AVI, MP4, and MPEG are all included. For specific devices not including computers, select the “device” tab within the software and choose which to “rip” or convert to. This automatically converts your DVD to a file most compatible with that device.
For Apple products, while much less than Microsoft products, including MP4 and AVI. DVDFab DVD Ripper software has an exclusive device section for Apple products, not including Mac computers. So if you aren’t sure which format to choose, check in the “device” tab and select your device you want your file to be compatible with. Products include iPads, iPhones, Apple TV, and iPods.
Another alternative for playing videos is RealPlayer. Though it’s been declining in popularity as QuickTime and iTunes blew up, it’s still a viable format for videos. RealPlayer can virtually play all types of video formats. Supported formats that are also compatible with DVDFab DVD Ripper are FLV, WMV, MP4, MP3, and AVI.
For users who want to watch their digitalized DVD collection on DVDFab Player 5, a powerful media player that supports 4K UHD. While DVDFab Player 5 can directly play your DVDs, “ripping” your DVDs to popular media formats like MP4, MKV, M2TS, and more can get you better resolution than before.
Unfortunately, video formats are not compatible across all devices or platforms. Different file formats do better on certain platforms. Some platforms only accept certain formats. Let’s take a look at what platforms accept what type of video formats.
Knowing the types of accepted video formats on their respective platforms will give you a better idea which file to “rip” to when using DVDFab DVD Ripper if you want to upload to specific websites. Be sure to review copyright licenses before you upload and make the video public.
YouTube supports the following formats that are also supported by DVDFab DVD Ripper: MPEG-4, FLV, MP4, WMV, and AVI.
Note that audio files like WAV, MP3, or PCM can’t be uploaded to YouTube. Also, video formats captured by your smartphones and tablets are often in MP4 format. DVDFab DVD Ripper has a unique function that optimizes MP4 for YouTube for 4K and standard files.
Facebook supports the following formats that are also supported by DVDFab DVD Ripper: AVI, FLV, M2TS, MKV, MP4, MPEG4, TS, and WMV.
Facebook recommends videos to be in either MP4 or MOV format. For audio, the AAC format is recommended and is supported by DVDFab DVD Ripper.
According to Vimeo, it supports “just about any kind of video file”, including the popular video formats: AVI, WMV, MOV, and MP4. Similar to YouTube, it doesn’t accept audio files.
While YouTube dominates the video space, some users prefer to use Dailymotion, a French video-sharing that’s a good alternative to YouTube.
Some argue that YouTube wins in quantity but Dailymotion wins in quality. However, the chances of watching a popular event minutes after it happens is higher on YouTube than Dailymotion. Yet, Dailymotion is more lenient in terms of the content’s being uploaded. As such, you’re more likely to avoid a copyright strike from Dailymotion than YouTube. Dailymotion videos can’t be more than 60 minutes. However, YouTube’s current default maximum length setting is 15 minutes but can be extended to a maximum duration of 12 hours.
With that being said, Dailymotion only supports a few video file formats, most of which are supported by DVDFab DVD Ripper: AVI, MP4, MPEG, WMV, and FLV.
The recommended audio codec for Dailymotion is AAC, which is also supported by DVDFab products, including DVDFab DVD Ripper.
